Content Guidelines

Lead paragraph

The first paragraph of body text on every page (immediately after the frontmatter, before any ## heading) must use lead styling and be exactly one paragraph:

This is the opening paragraph that sets up the page.

Front Matter

Standard page front matter:

---
title: Page Title
layout: base
date: YYYY-MM-DD
header-image: /assets/images/headers/image-name.jpg
header-height: 60vh # optional, defaults vary
---

Image Management

Adding New Images

  1. Place in the correct assets/images/[type]/ folder
  2. Use descriptive, hyphenated lowercase names
  3. Optimize them — one run per size in the table below (see “Optimizing images”)
  4. Verify images display correctly locally

Optimizing images

The image scripts and the Optimize Images workflow are shared, unmodified, with Xanthan and its sites; scripts/README.md documents them. Don’t edit them here — copy newer versions from xanthan-web. What’s specific to Amaranth is the sizes:

Size Guidelines

| Type | Max Width | Use Case | |——|———–|———-| | headers | 2000px | Page heroes | | ScrollStory backgrounds (about/name-origins/images) | 2000px | Full-screen scrollybox/bg images | | events/posters/projects/services/site | 1600px | General content | | team | 1200px | Portraits |

Navigation is defined in _data/top-nav.yml. Each top-level menu has one folder, and a page lives in the folder of the menu it appears under, so the URL matches the menu (About > Future Directions is about/future-directions.md at /about/future-directions). Pages that aren’t in a menu go in the folder of the section they belong to.

When adding new pages:

  1. Create the markdown file in the folder for its menu
  2. Add entry to top-nav.yml if it should appear in nav
  3. Use disabled: true for placeholder/coming-soon items

When moving or renaming a page, keep its old URL working: git mv the page together with its images/ folder, update links to it, and add the old URL to its front matter as redirect_from: /old/path (the jekyll-redirect-from plugin builds the redirect).

Don’t create top-level folders that share a name with another amaranth-unm repo published under amaranth.unm.edu, such as ai-sketchbook/, reliable-ai/, or campus-history/. Those URLs belong to the separate sites.

Common Tasks

Adding a new page

  1. Create folder/page-name.md with proper front matter
  2. Add to _data/top-nav.yml if needed
  3. Add header image to assets/images/headers/ if using one

Adding team members

Edit _data/team.yml and add photo to assets/images/team/

Adding events

Edit _data/events.yml and add image to assets/images/events/
