These massive monuments are originally dated back to the 6th century and were carved directly into sandstone cliffs.

1 These monuments remains reside in current day Afghanistan which was known as Bactria or Bakhtria during the time of the Silk Road.

These monuments originally stood at the heights of 115 and 174 feet tall, which can be considered as an extremely impressive feat during the time of its construction as during the 6th century, human civilization did not have the technology that we do today in order to create the massive structures such as these.

The colossal Buddhas of Bactria or Bakhtria were incredibly impactful in regard to the importance of Buddhism along the Silk Road, as these monuments were heavily visited as well as respected by many people who crossed the Silk Road.2

Colossal Buddhas

The two Buddhas represented in the monuments were the Śākyamuni, the historical Buddha and the Maitreya, the future Buddha which both of these figures are prominent throughout many different depictions of Buddhist art across many different areas along the Silk Road.

Why this matters: The fact that these two figures were prominent within Bakhtria during the sixth century alludes to the known fact that ideas of religion were shared across the Silk Road.

These colossal monuments are a vital part of the representation of Buddha along the Silk Road as they stood out for many different reasons as well as connect to the historical and future significance of the religious ideas of Buddhism.

These statues best exemplified the Gandharan Buddhist art school, as well as greater culture landscape of Buddhism and its influence during the 1st and 13th centuries.

The Colossal Buddhas of Bakhtria were such an important part of the history regarding the Silk Road as well as the cultural importance of current day Afghanistan that it became a target for the Taliban.

When discussing these monuments, it is extremely important to discuss the fact that they were destroyed and how that heavily impacted not only the Afghanistan communities but the rest of the world.

The attack on the monuments was a message from a terrorist group and it was an abuse of their power, a disgrace to the religion of Buddhism and an extremely unfortunate event that took place.

Most consider it to be a complete tragedy. The monuments will forever be grieved by those all around the world, the masterpieces that once were an important part of Buddhist culture and artwork.
