Rrepresentations of Buddha

The discussion of Buddhism when considering the Silk Road is a very importance topic as well as a very importance piece of the significance of religion and sharing ideas across many different regions. From India to China to Gandhara and lastly to Bakhtria, the spread of ideas, religion, commodities, goods, and even people there will always be the consideration of Buddha.

An important message in accordance with Buddhism is the idea of the circle of life. As one will live their life just as their life will end. Karma also plays an important role within Buddhism as one will reap what they sew. This history of Buddhism is a very interesting one, the connections from one region to another is a very important part of the Silk Road.

While discussing the importance of Buddhism along the Silk Road, there has been a distinct connection between Śākyamuni, the historical representation of Buddha as well as the Maitreya, the future representation of Buddha.

The Influences of Buddha

Both of these figures have come up within the four different objects chosen from four different regions across the Silk Road and that is significant in regard to the spread of Buddhism across different regions.

When discussing Buddhism specifically in India, it’s important to discuss the fact that India is considered the birthplace of Buddhism.

Within the chosen object of the limestone dome-slab from the Amaravati, this object is said to be dated from around 50-100 AD, meaning that Buddhism within the region of India has been around for a very long time.

All of the chosen objects in regard to representation of Buddha across four different regions each hold their own cultural significance.

Different Scupltures of Buddha

However, the gilded bronze statue that is dated to the sixth century found in Northern China is particularly interesting as it is a very unique depiction of not only one figure of Buddha, but two symmetrical figures that are meant to represent the historical and the future Buddha.

The few scupltures of Buddha represent the influence of Buddhism across different regions

The most interesting part of this statue is the way that the Buddhas are depicted, they are emaciated, which could be correlated to the end of life stage whereas most notable depictions of Buddha from the Silk Road tend to have a more lively-look to them, they are healthier-looking.

The chosen object from the ancient region of Bakhtria, the colossal Buddhas are not only outstanding in their size but also in their impact that they once held. It’s incredibly unfortunate that the colossal Buddha was a target by the Taliban in 2001 and we are not left with the remanent.

The importance that the colossal Buddha held will forever remain in not only the community of present-day Afghanistan but the rest of the world. The amazing construction of the masterpiece that once was, will continue to leave the world in awe. The fact that the colossal Buddhas were carved out of sandstone directly into the side of a mountain, was incredibly impressive. It will always be a shame that it was destroyed. We can universally be grateful that the cite is now under protection.

The last chosen object of the representation of Buddha across four different regions comes from the ancient region of Gandhara and that is of the standing Buddha which now resided in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

This statue is made of a grey schist which greatly differs from the other chosen objects. However, it can be very reflective of the time that it was created, during the 3rd-4th century as this material was often used when making sculptures.

The material of grey schist is particularly interesting as it can sometimes be seen as a green color, not only a grey color.

Another very interesting piece of this sculpture is that both of the hands no longer exist however they were very important pieces of the statue itself as the hand placement of Buddha imagery can hold different meaning depending on the placement.

The opportunity of getting to research four different and unique representations of Buddha across different regions along the Silk Road offers the chance to see the deeply rooted connections specially within religion along the Silk Road.

Buddhism as a religious belief system is a very interesting topic in and of itself, the impact it had not only along the Silk Road but globally is very fascinating.

Each of the chosen objects have their own story tell along with connecting their artistic styles to a much larger picture of Buddhism which connects with different regions. It’s very interesting getting the opportunity to research Buddhism and the impact it holds.

Connection of Buddha: In the Song Dynasty there was a representation of Buddha-Jesus which stood as a representation of the Manichaean Faith. This representation of a Buddha-Jesus shows the different interpretations ofBuddhism across many different regions even within different areas of China as we discussed one representation of symmetrical Buddhas in Northern China.
